Adventure Game Tutorial Series
« on: January 28, 2014, 07:30:29 PM »
I didn't know which sub-forum to post this under, so I figured 'General' would be best. While it is far from perfect, as I'm not the world's best programmer, I have gone and started a tutorial series on creating a 2D top-down adventure game using Otter. In order for anyone following along (all 4 of you \:D/) to have something to bite into at first, I've released 4 parts all at once. I should be releasing about 1-2 entries per week, until I conclude with Part 10.

If I am stepping on anyone's toes by doing this, let me know, and I can remove the posts. If not, I hope you enjoy the series! I'll keep an updated table of contents here on this forum!

Otter 2D Top-Down Adventure Tutorial
Part 1: An Intro to Otter2D, a 2D Framework Using SFML.NET
Part 2: Creating Your First Scene
Part 3: Polishing our TitleScene
Part 4: Adding the Player Entity
Part 5: Sound Effects, Particles, and Screen Shake
Part 6: Enemies and Collisions
Part 7: Introduction to Tilemaps
Part 8: Creating a "Zeldalike" Camera
Part 9: Adding a Boss and an EndScene
Part 10: Polish and Final Thoughts

Thanks for reading!

Awesome! This reminds me I should be making more Otter videos, oops.  Also for anyone out there about to dive into this, make sure you understand that Otter is still a work in progress and things could change before the eventual 1.0 release.

Ah, I meant to make note of that in my first entry. I'll probably update the series as you update Otter, but I'll still make a note that the project's stability may be volatile.

Thanks! Slowly making progress...

Tks Man, The 5 Tutorial was great!

Awesome! Ha, I'm just glad the code in my blog post doesn't have any typos. Part 6 should be up tonight, EST.

EDIT: Part 6 is up! I probably won't start Part 7 right away, perhaps by the weekend it will be up.

Part 7 is finally up! I didn't get to cover Ogmo, and will likely save it for a later entry. Regardless, if you follow the tutorial through all seven parts, you will have tilemaps with collisions working. Onto Part 8!

Part 9 is up! Part 10 should be up by the end of the weekend, as I plan to keep it rather short and sweet.
